National Nanotechnology Day is October 9
What are you doing for #NationalNanoDay?

National Nanotechnology Day is an annual celebration featuring community-led events and activities on or around October 9 to help raise awareness of nanotechnology, its use in products that enrich our daily lives, and the challenges and opportunities for the future. This date, 10/9, pays homage to the nanometer scale, 10–9 meters. This year, given that October 9 falls on a Federal holiday, you may consider celebrating National Nanotechnology Day on, say, Friday, Oct. 6 or Tuesday, Oct. 10.

The theme for this year’s National Nanotechnology Day is “Enabling the Nanotechnology Revolution.” This phrase is inspired by the vision statement for the National Nanotechnology Initiative, which is to enable “a future in which the ability to understand and control matter at the nanoscale leads to ongoing revolutions in technology and industry that benefit society.” This year, we are celebrating nanotechnology’s achievements over the past 20 years, as well as looking forward to how the National Nanotechnology Initiative can continue to best support critical and emerging technologies of the future.

On Oct. 11, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will hold a virtual symposium on the continuous manufacturing of nanomaterials. FDA experts will provide an overview of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research’s experience with approving several solid oral drug products that benefit from continuous manufacturing technologies. The experts will also discuss ways in which industry, academia and other regulatory agencies can collaborate and engage with FDA in advancing the field of nanotechnology and continuous manufacturing.

Whether at home, at school, outside, or in a science museum, there are many ways to explore advances in nanotechnology and how it is impacting our everyday lives! Planning for various events and activities is underway at schools, universities, and various organizations around the country.

The National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO), on behalf of the U.S. Government’s National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), invites you to listen in on a roundtable discussion on nanotechnology-enabled batteries and energy storage that could have an impact on energy efficiency, sustainable development, and climate change in the near term. The conversation will focus on identifying the most pressing near-term needs, opportunities, and challenges that deserve our attention as we look to accelerate the impact of those technologies.The moderated discussion will tackle all aspects of the topic – ranging from exciting R&D opportunities to commercialization challenges – by featuring a small group of invited experts from different sectors and backgrounds (listed below). Don’t miss the opportunity to learn from this exciting exchange!

This roundtable is a critical part of the Nano4EARTH National Nanotechnology Challenge, which aims to leverage recent investments in understanding and controlling matter at the nanoscale to develop technologies and industries that address climate change. Nano4EARTH focuses on facilitating opportunities for members of the nanotechnology community to convene, collaborate, and share resources. Nano4EARTH also strives to provide mechanisms that support technology development and commercialization of nanotechnology-enabled climate solutions.

The topic of this roundtable was identified at the Nano4EARTH kick-off workshop (summary readout and video archive) as a particularly promising area that could have an impact in a short time frame (four years or less). This roundtable is the second of four.

Today is the 22nd Anniversary of 9-11. I had the opportunity to participate in the VOICES Center for Resilience Conference yesterday. VOICES provides guidance to 9-11 Families, 9-11 Responders and 9-11 Survivors.

We will Always Remember those who have been affected since – the over 6,300 responders and survivors who have died of 9/11-related illnesses, and the families and friends they left behind – and the over 77,000 individuals who are currently in treatment for serious medical and mental health conditions.

About

Since the current National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI) award cycle ends in 2025, we are looking ahead to the future and the next national resource in science and technology infrastructure.  Shared facilities, such as those historically supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), provide researchers a low-barrier entry point to advanced fabrication and characterization resources and provide experiential learning opportunities for the next generation workforce.  The recent passing of the CHIPS and Science Act makes this an especially critical juncture for US nanotechnology infrastructure and an opportune time to thoughtfully craft an infrastructure roadmap that advances domestic semiconductor research and manufacturing, as well as cross-discipline research in adjacent fields of science, technology, and engineering.

During this interactive workshop, YOU can provide essential insights and ideas towards shaping this future nanotechnology infrastructure resource.  Your input will help develop a public-facing white paper recommending a path forward to US government agencies.  Please join us for a two-day, hybrid workshop featuring inspiring speakers from diverse disciplines and sectors, panel discussions, and idea generation.  Through active participation, workshop attendees will aim to identify technological trends, significant gaps in our existing technical capabilities and education, and prudent solutions in our journey toward the next shared infrastructure resource.

Sally C. Gutierrez has just completed a detail as the Acting Director of the Groundwater Characterization and Remediation Division in Ada, Oklahoma.  Since 2020, she has been a Senior Advisor in the Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response in USEPA’s Office of Research and Development in Cincinnati, Ohio. She continues to assist in the development of wastewater-based disease surveillance in communities, PFAS treatment, and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.  She is a hydrologist and has been a member of the career Senior Executive Service since her appointment in 2000.

From 2018 to mid-2020, she served as the Acting Director of Water Permits Division in the Office of Wastewater Management, Office of Water at USEPA in Washington, DC where she was responsible for overseeing the nations’ wastewater permitting program.  Prior to that she was the Director of EPA’s Environmental Technology Innovation Cluster Development and Support Program.  She has also held the positions of Director of the National Risk Management Research Laboratory (NRMRL) and the Director of the Water Supply and Water Resources Division in NRMRL.

Sally is a native Texan. Before coming to USEPA she was responsible for administering water programs at the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission.
