Easton Remembers Sept. 11 Victims in Memorial Ceremonies

The Easton community remembered the lives lost during the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks with multiple ceremonies.

Residents gathered early in the morning at the Easton 9/11 memorial in front of the library for a moment of silence. A wreath was laid on the memorial to remember those who lost their lives that tragic day.

During the ceremony, Vincent Caprio, a 9/11 first responder and survivor, reflected on the 2,977 individuals who perished in the attacks. Caprio also honored the memory of the more than 7,000 first responders and survivors who have since passed away due to 9/11-related illnesses.

The Easton Fire Department remembered Sept. 11 by placing 343 flags arranged in the shape of the Twin Towers on the town green to honor the New York firefighters who perished during the attacks.

“We put 343 flags out on the green to remember those fallen,” said Firefighter Dave Davies, who joined Fairfield firefighters to dig through dust and debris in search of survivors at Ground Zero the day after the attacks. “We also placed a picture of the Hanson family to honor them.”

Eunice Hanson and her late husband, Lee, lost their son, Peter Burton Hanson, 32, daughter-in-law Sue Kim Hanson, 34, and granddaughter Christine Lee Hanson, 2 1/2, during the attacks. The family was on board the hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston to Los Angeles that crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center on the morning of Sept. 11.

Easton residents also gathered at a 6 p.m. ceremony organized by resident June Logie at the 9/11 memorial in front of the library, according to a Facebook post.

Weekly Update from Rep. Hughes

Dear Neighbor,

On Wednesday at 8:30 a.m., I joined neighbors and town leaders at our Easton 9/11 Memorial across from the library for a reflective community remembrance of the 23 years that have passed since the attacks on our country. We pledged to remember this history and tell our stories, keep the memories of those we lost, and those subsequently impacted, both as first responders, or the many who enlisted and returned or didn’t return, in the time since that fateful day.

One 9/11 first responder, Vincent Caprio, attended and shared his story and advocacy for the 9/11 Responders Health Fund. He gave me a coin, pictured below, in recognition of our shared advocacy and recognition of all those who are living and suffering from the legacy of those attacks.

I am advocating for Congress to not only fully fund The James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act of 2010, but also ask our federal delegation to co-sponsor and pass the bipartisan 9/11 Responder and Survivor Health Funding Correction Act of 2024, to address the WTC Health Program budget shortfall, and finally address the needs of all those who responded to the tragedy. So many firefighters, police officers, nurses, health care workers, airport workers, teachers, city and public employees, and communications workers have yet to receive relief.
