Our education member, Omni Nano, needs to raise the last $10,000 to win the challenge grant (details below).
Omni Nano has been inspiring high school students to be the next generation of scientists and engineers. This ensures that America continues to be the world leader in innovation and technology.
If you care about STEM education and the future of America’s competitiveness, please donate to Omni Nano today (We just did).
P.S. About the Challenge Grant: Omni Nano now has a unique opportunity to expand their programs and impact more students. They received a Challenge Grant from a Family Charitable Trust. If they raise $25,000 by the end of February, this Trust will also donate $25,000 to Omni Nano (1:1 matching). These funds will allow 1,000 students to receive a textbook for their STEM/nanotechnology courses.Follow this link to read the Challenge Grant Letter: https://omninano.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/omni-nano-challenge-grant-announcement-letter-redacted.pdf
• Elizabeth Dougherty (USPTO) • Craig Morris (USPTO)
Overview:
The Nanotechnology Entrepreneurship Network (NEN) brings new and seasoned entrepreneurs together with the people and resources available to support them. This emerging network provides a forum for sharing best practices for advancing nanotechnology commercialization and the lessons learned along the technology development pathway.
A key stop on the technology development pathway is protecting the underlying intellectual property. Entrepreneurs intending to commercialize an emerging technology, such as a nanomaterial or a nanomaterial-enabled product, need to be cognizant of pertinent intellectual property issues that will impact their business.
In this webinar we will welcome guests Elizabeth Dougherty, Eastern Regional Outreach Director for the USPTO, and Craig Morris, Managing Attorney for Trademark Educational Outreach for the USPTO. Our guests will discuss types of intellectual property, intellectual property strategies, the patent process, and issues related to trademarks.
Please use the login link sent with your registration confirmation email to attend the webinar, or login here.
Our colleague and education member, Omni Nano, has received a Challenge Grant from a Family Charitable Trust. If Omni Nano raises $25,000 by the end of February, this Trust will also donate $25,000 to Omni Nano (1:1 matching).
Omni Nano provides the digital textbooks and curricula to instruct nanotech courses in the high schools and colleges of our communities. Because of Omni Nano’s work, there are now thousands of students across America and around the world that know more about nanotechnology. Their work to educate young adults in nanotechnology is very important to our community.
Please, join me in supporting Omni Nano by making a donation in the amount with which you are most comfortable. I personally donate every year, and I am proud of our NanoBCA members who continuously donate. There are many ways you can donate to Omni Nano: https://omninano.org/donate-to-stem-education/
To celebrate the 15-year anniversary of the authorization of the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office releases a special anniversary episode of the Stories from the NNI podcast series every Monday. In each of these episodes, an expert from academia, government, or industry shares his or her perspectives on key research and development advances in nanotechnology and how the NNI has changed the nanotechnology landscape.
On National Entrepreneurs Day last month, the National Nanotechnology Coordination Office (NNCO) began to build a community around nanotechnology entrepreneurship; for entrepreneurs, would-be entrepreneurs and other interested parties.
The intent of the network is to grow the nanotechnology entrepreneurship community through the sharing of best practices, mentorship and experiences. The first event was a podcast episode featuring Joe Sprengard, CEO of Veelo Technologies. That episode can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcXdwFkISzw
National Nanotechnology Day is October 9 What are you doing for #NationalNanoDay?
National Nanotechnology Day is an annual celebration featuring a series of community-led events and activities on or around October 9 to help raise awareness of nanotechnology, how it is currently used in products that enrich our daily lives, and the challenges and opportunities it holds for the future. This date, 10/9, pays homage to the nanometer scale, 10-9 meters.
Planning for various events and activities is underway at schools, universities, and various organizations around the country! The National Nanotechnology Coordination Office is promoting the following activities:
100 Billion Nanometer Dash: Will you be running 100 billion nanometers (or 100 meters)? If so, share your pictures and videos using #100BillionNanometers and #NationalNanoDay.
Sizing Up Nano: How do you explain “nano”? (For example, how does a nanometer compare to the diameter of a strand of hair? Or how thick is a sheet of paper in nanometers?) We welcome your thoughts! Tweet your explanations, pictures, and videos using #sizingupnano and #NationalNanoDay.
NIOSH is working with RTI International to distribute a survey to companies that manufacture, distribute, fabricate, formulate, use, or provide services related to engineered nanomaterials. The goal of the survey is to assess the impact of NIOSH’s contribution to guidelines and risk mitigation practices for the safe handling of engineered nanomaterials in the workplace. Feedback from this survey will inform NIOSH’s research agenda to enhance relevance and impact on creating guidance to manage nanomaterial workers safety and health. The survey will only take about 20 minutes to complete. If you or someone you know receives an invitation to complete this survey, please know that we look forward to and value your input! If you have any questions, contact Adrienne Eastlake, aeastlake@cdc.gov.
Held annually on the first Friday in October, Manufacturing Day helps show the reality of modern manufacturing careers by encouraging thousands of companies and educational institutions around the nation to open their doors to students, parents, teachers and community leaders.
SPEAKERS – Dr. Mark Ballentine (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) – Dr. Scott Brown (The Chemours Company) – Dr. Katherine Tyner (U.S. Food and Drug Administration)
MODERATOR Dr. Ajit Jillavenkatesa (National Institute of Standards and Technology)
OVERVIEW The development and use of nanotechnology-related standards is critical to ensuring validated measurements and methods to specify nanomaterial-containing products. Standards are also necessary for comparative evaluation and assessment of the EHS effects. This webinar will discuss various existing and ongoing standards efforts and will highlight case studies from industry and government on how these standards are being applied and supporting nanoEHS research and safer product design. This webinar will also discuss how interested stakeholders can engage in these efforts.
December 3, 2018, marked the 15th anniversary of the authorization of the NNI. As part of the NNI’s year-long celebration, the 2019 NanoEHS webinar series focuses on the state of the science in this important area.
