Climate change is among the most pressing issues of our time. By understanding and controlling matter at the nanoscale, nanotechnology is helping develop and accelerate technologies and industries that address climate change and benefit society. With that in mind, the White House recently announced the launch of the NNI’s inaugural National Nanotechnology Challenge, Nano4EARTH. This challenge is a call to action to mobilize stakeholders to identify and address barriers to widespread adoption of nanoscale solutions to the climate change crisis.

To provide a venue for this critical discussion, we welcome the new year with the Nano4EARTH kick-off workshop. The workshop will be a forum for the community to share ideas on specific opportunities that can be achieved – especially through multiagency coordination – in a 4-year time frame; to identify barriers to the scale-up, adoption, and dissemination of climate nanotechnologies; to establish metrics to monitor progress; and to build connections across the diverse community.

This dynamic workshop will be a hybrid, two-half-day event that will be held at L’Enfant Plaza in Washington, DC, on January 24–25. It will feature keynote presentations from DOE Office of Science Director, Dr. Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, and Kavli Foundation President, Dr. Cynthia Friend. There will also be three expert panels and an all-hands strategic planning session to facilitate deep discussions among participants.

Space is limited, so please register today to be part of the conversation!

With the midterm elections over and the holiday season upon us, I felt that it was time to take a break from public policy. On this webinar, I would like to share with you an extraordinary true-life journey from Author, Laura Galloway. Laura will be presenting her story on our November webinar Dalvi – Six Years in the Arctic Tundra. Dalvi is the story of Laura’s time in a reindeer-herding village in the Arctic, forging a solitary existence as she struggled to learn the language and make her way in a remote community for which there were no guide books or manuals for how to fit in. Her time in the north opened her to a new world.

I hope you will be able to join us. Here are the webinar access details:

EPA Requests Nominations for Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals

Posted on November 15th, 2022 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The NanoBusiness Commercialization Association (NanoBCA) would like to bring to your attention the following opportunity for the nanotechnology community:

By Lynn L. Bergeson and Carla N. Hutton

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on November 10, 2022, that it is requesting nominations of prospective candidates for membership on the Science Advisory Committee on Chemicals (SACC) established under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). 87 Fed. Reg. 67898. Any interested person or organization may nominate qualified persons to be considered for appointment to the SACC. Individuals may also self-nominate. Nominations are due December 12, 2022.

SACC serves as a scientific peer review mechanism of EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention (OCSPP). According to EPA, SACC provides independent scientific advice and recommendations to EPA on the scientific basis for risk assessments, methodologies, and pollution prevention measures and approaches for chemicals regulated under TSCA. Currently, there are 17 SACC members, with eight membership terms that will expire over the next year.

EPA states that its “rigorous scientific peer review processes ensure all Agency decisions are founded on credible science and data. Science provides the foundation for EPA policies, actions and decisions made on behalf of the American people.”

To be considered, all nominations should include the following information:

– Current contact information for the nominee (including the nominee’s name, organization, current business address, e-mail address, and daytime telephone number);

– The nominee’s disciplinary and specific areas of expertise;

– Research activities;

– Recent service on other federal advisory committees and national or international professional organizations; and

– When available, a biographical sketch of the nominee, indicating current position and educational background.

EPA states that it is seeking nominations from individuals who have demonstrated high levels of competence, knowledge, and expertise in scientific and other technical fields relevant to chemical safety and risk assessment. EPA seeks nominees with expertise in a variety of disciplines and focus areas, including human health and ecological risk assessment, biostatistics, epidemiology, pediatrics, physiologically based pharmacokinetics (PBPK), toxicology and pathology (including neurotoxicology, developmental/reproductive toxicology, and carcinogenesis), and chemical exposure pathways to susceptible life stages and subpopulations (women, children, and other potentially exposed subpopulations).

EPA states that nominees should have backgrounds and experiences that would contribute to the diversity of scientific viewpoints on the committee — including professional experiences in government, labor, public health, public interest, animal protection, industry, and other groups — and as the EPA Administrator determines to be advisable (e.g., geographical location; social and cultural backgrounds; and professional affiliations).

NanoBCA Recommends: ABA Environment, Energy, and Resources 30th Fall Conference

Posted on August 23rd, 2022 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

The NanoBusiness Commercialization Association (NanoBCA) would like to recommend the following:

American Bar Association’s ABA Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources 30th Fall Conference
September 21-23, 2022
Nashville, TN

The American Bar Association’s (ABA) Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (SEER) 30th Fall Conference will look at rapidly emerging developments in environmental, energy, and resources law, including the novel approaches taken to bring solutions to climate change, sustainability, clean air, clean water, chemical management, environmental justice, and other transformative issues. Lynn L. Bergeson, Managing Partner, Bergeson & Campbell, P.C. (B&C®), will present during the “Periodic Review: Reinvigorated Chemical Product Regulation under FIFRA and TSCA” session.

An amazing slate of programming and speakers is planned for Nashville. In addition to being the 30th anniversary of the Fall Conference, this year also coincides with the 50th anniversaries of monumental federal environmental laws that include the Clean Water Act; the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act; the Ocean Dumping Act; the Coastal Zone Management Act; and the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The Conference will reflect on this legacy and other historic environmental laws as it focuses on the future, including emerging topics and trends that are fundamentally changing the course of the legal practice.

Senior Biden administration officials and experienced practitioners will share their insights on a host of thought-provoking issues. The Conference will look at rapidly emerging developments in environmental, energy, and resources law, including the novel approaches taken to bring solutions to climate change, sustainability, clean air, clean water, chemical management, environmental justice, and other transformative issues.

The Conference will also highlight the Section’s focus on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives. We are mindful that after the Conference location was contracted, Tennessee passed a series of laws that discriminate against the LGBTQ+ community. Nashville officials have opposed those laws and stated that they will not enforce them. We are pleased that the Mayor of Nashville, John Cooper, has agreed to speak to these issues in his conference opening remarks. The Section prides itself on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment at our events and does not tolerate prejudice or discrimination. We are also mindful that Tennessee has recently brought into force laws relating to reproductive choice that many of our members strongly oppose. The position of the American Bar Association can be found here.

Whether you work in the public, private, or nonprofit sectors, this is a conference that you will not want to miss.
