WATER INNOVATIONS NEWS – A Water Innovations Alliance Publication – July 2012

Posted on August 6th, 2012 in Uncategorized | No Comments »

Summer arrives with heat, drought, a lot of exciting water news and a host of initiatives by the Water Innovations Alliance.

First off, the WIA has been hard at work in Washington, DC meeting with political leaders on a host of water technology issues. Strong efforts are underway to develop a smart water system pilot project in conjunction with several US cities, our members, (led by GE and Sensus) and a cross section of US government agencies. Leaders on Capitol Hill and in the Agencies have welcomed this initiative.

On Friday May 18th we held a successful one day Conference focusing on America’s Water Infrastructure http://www.waterinnovations.org/WIS/index.php. We had the following Keynote Speakers providing their road map on Water Infrastructure:

– Alan Hinchman, Global Industry Manager-Water, GE Intelligent Platforms
– Rob Coulbeck, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, ENBALA, Demand Site Regulation for a Smart Water Industry
– Michael Shapiro, Deputy Assistant Administrator Office of Water, US EPA
– Paul Gagliardo, Manager Innovation Development, American Water
– Sheri Moreno, General Counsel, GE Intelligent Platforms
– Alex Herrgott, Director of Transportation & Infrastructure, Congressional & Public Affairs Division, US Chamber of Commerce
– Kevin McGovern, Chairman & CEO, The Water Initiative

The presentations have been posted to our site. http://www.waterinnovations.org/WIS/wis_presentations.php

We are committed to having an open discussion in regard to Water Infrastructure and sharing our Speakers’ opinions and thoughts to all.

We are looking forward to our next Event. We are returning to Boston for our 4th Annual Water Innovation Alliance http://www.waterinnovations.org/event.php Conference being held at the Seaport World Trade Center http://www.seaportboston.com/meetings-and-events/overview.aspx. Last fall we sold out our room block. Register today.

Also of public policy interest, Rep. Eddie Johnson introduced two new water bills in Congress that received strong support from the WIA and its members: H.R. 5826: Coordinating Water Research for a Clean Water Future Act of 2012 and H.R. 5827: Energy and Water Research Integration Act of 2012. We have been told that there will soon be Congressional hearings on new technologies and innovative solutions surrounding drought issues.

The Water Innovations Foundation is also working on a new research report for the fall on the Water Energy Nexus as part of our efforts to develop a comprehensive view and strategy around this vital issue. We recommend you check out the attached whitepaper, “How ‘Smart’ Water Systems Save Money,” as it is a focused take on what benefits would come from moving towards a smart water “grid.”

Thanks as always to our members and a special thank you to GE for hosting the aforementioned event in DC a few weeks back. We hope to see all of you in Boston or at one of our upcoming events soon. Take care.
